Greening Schools to Save Lives: How Climate Change Education Reduces Disease, Violence, and Youth Mortality

Climate change education in schools reduce climate health:

How does greening schools and communities reduce violence? Climate related health& violence are some of the leading causes of death among youth? In USA, ages between 1-44 died of climate related-violence than cancer, HIV AIDS or flu.

In Uganda, climate health among youth include communicable diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS. The lower respiratory tract infections, alongside non-communicable diseases (NCDs), injuries, and maternal and perinatal conditions some of the health complications which can be avoided if we all subscribe to the greening program that BURACED UGANDA organization started in communities and all academic institutions .There's also a growing concern about the impact of alcohol, drugs, and other substances, as well as gender-based violence and exploitation. These arise out of disappointment from unfulfilled expectations.

How do these causes Specifically contributing factors?

1. Infectious Diseases:
These are categories as:
a. Malaria: This is a major cause of illness and death, particularly in children and adolescents. These groups have plenty of time which can be exploited to venture into rural or urban farming practices we train to enhance their well-being at school or in the communities during holidays.

b. HIV/AIDS: While progress has been made in treatment, it remains a significant contributor to mortality, especially among children, youth and their families. Greening programs are vital in making youth busy and unable to engage in promiscuous behaviors. It's a worthwhile program any serious university, Tertiary institution or High school wouldn't skip. It makes their students become responsible citizens with emphasis on their health ,their wealth and ecosystem preservation.

c. Respiratory Infections: Pneumonia is a leading cause of death among children under five. Other Infections such as Diarrhea  diseases,vaccine-preventable diseases, and epidemic-prone diseases also contribute. Some of these diseases can be eradicated if youth participate in our greening exercises where we encourage each student to at least plant 4 trees: 2 medicinal trees, 2 fruit trees, 2 Oba cardo trees, 2 Mangoes  in their homesteads.
2. Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) include mental health disorders which arise out of absence of enough open spaces, tree shades, public parlors in schools, campuses or homesteads. We train them how to plant care for trees, how to monitor forests, wetlands, breading grounds, domestic waste collection and recycling.
3.Injuries:
Unintentional injuries, such as road traffic crashes, drowning, and burns, are a significant cause of death among children& adolescents.
4. Maternal and Perinatal Conditions:
Maternal and perinatal conditions also contribute to the high mortality rates among youth. Young mothers can benefit from urban farming practices which is highly recommended as preventive medicine by doctors.

5. Substance Abuse:
Alcohol and drug use can lead to health complications and premature death, often as coping mechanisms for climate stress or poverty. Mental health is one of the effects that arise out of climate change due to the rising temperature, climate mobility caused by climate disasters such as mudslides, floods, landslides extra . By greening schools, students and communities learn sustainable mitigation measures and adaptation mechanisms that can increase their coping/sustainability.

6. Gender-Based Violence and Exploitation:
Young girls who get into unprepared marriages are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence and exploitation by their husbands. Greening schools prepare students to embrace green jobs and be self sufficient in life. Most girls enter marriage at a young age for economic reasons. By greening schools, we nurture students who are able to engage in micro projects like vegetable, cabbage , tomato growing in the backyard, engage in recycling domestic waste among others. These make youth busy & unattracted to sex before marriage.

7.Other factors influencing mortality are:
-Poverty and Unemployment: These can exacerbate health issues by limiting access to healthcare, proper nutrition, and safe living conditions. We offer greening lessons which equip youth with knowledge and tools to embrace green jobs in tourism, forestry, agriculture, animal husbandry, ecological monitoring, renewable Energy, reforestation extra. Some of these can employ more unemployed youth.

-Malnutrition: Contributes to weakened immune systems and increased vulnerability to infections. Learning how to do urban farming in plastic bottles, old basins, sacks to grow vegetables rich in nutrients can boost youth immunity and prevent their health immune system against diseases.
-Poor Sanitation and Water Quality: Increase the risk of diarrheal diseases and other infections. Through our water and sanitation management component, we train youth to engage in civic clean ups, regular reduce the amount of harm caused by poor sanitation and hygiene.

-Air Pollution: Contributes to respiratory illnesses. By planting trees which store, and sequester carbon dioxide and manufacture oxygen, students in green schools are at an added advantage. Therefore school administrators should invite us to stage these informative conferences at their respective school compasses.

Limiting ourselves to violence, we see violence in communities experienced through bullying, fights, shooting and other forms of aggression leading to a host of mental, physical and social health problems for community members. Living in a community afflicted by violence is associated with relationship troubles and poor mental  and physical health due to lack of access to safe spaces for outdoor activities. Greening education in academic institutions engaged students to actively create open spaces, plant more trees for shades to prevent community violence associated  with anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. To avoid violence, schools should embrace our greening theoretical and practical education.
